In solid mechanics, complex materials and structures have traditionally been analyzed and designed by simplifying their geometry, material behavior, physical phenomena, and design spaces through various assumptions and low-dimensional representations. Our research aims to combine mechanics and data to reduce our reliance on such simplifications and to bring richer, more complex behaviors, beyond what conventional models can adequately represent, into computation and design. To this end, we develop modeling approaches for representing complex physical phenomena, computational methods for solving them efficiently and reliably, and optimization methods for exploring broad and challenging design spaces. We place equal importance on going beyond the development of computational methods to physically understanding the outcomes of simulations and optimization, and validating them in real-world problems involving structures, materials, and manufacturing processes. Through this approach, we address a wide range of solid mechanics problems, including structural and material design, advanced manufacturing processes, and micro- and nanoscale mechanical systems. Looking forward, we are expanding our research toward computational mechanics that uses limited observations and data to infer internal states and predict future behavior, connecting not only to the design of new structures and materials but also to the assessment and decision-making of systems already in operation.
